The M(other) Project

M(other)2 Too
This journal article has been made especially for Body Space and Technology. Most of the words, however, were written for a conference presentation called 'M(other)2: Research as Performance' at the international PARIP (Practice as Research in Performance) conference, held in June 2005. A preliminary version of this presentation, also entitled 'M(other)2', was performed at the International Federation of Theatre Research conference in St Petersburg, Russia the previous year.

It is important to us that we reflect the nature of our research and its findings in both the form and content of our conference presentations. Because this research is based on the embodiment of reflective practice, our presentation included a number of different types of performative texts: the reading of expository writing in collective and individual voices; performed scenes from M(other)1, restaged in front of video projections made for the original production; video excerpts of M(other)1 in Athens as well as M(other)3 in its entirety; newly devised visual scenes that reflect our working relationships and collaborative processes; and performance writing in the form of a group manifesto.

Similarly, the electronic article you are now reading attempts to use the specificity and fluidity of its medium to present the layers of meaning and intention, as well as the webs of inter-relationships, inherent in making performance events live and on film. For Body Space & Technology, we have asked Russell Frampton to contribute a new section about his collaboration with us as a homogenous group (this contrasts interestingly with the fact that we always approach collaboration together as individuals within Lusty Juventus) and to draw out some of the aesthetic decisions made as a result of working with digital technologies and projection.

On this page, you can watch a clip from, and read the script of, the opening of our presentation at the PARIP conference, and look at pictures that were taken during this event. Like all the files in this article, these can also be accessed from the Resources pages.
